OER Benefits and Challenges

Overview/Purpose

In this module you will learn about the many benefits of using open educational resources OER), as well as some challenges. This is important to understand since before you begin to use these resources, you want to be aware of both. For example, some advantages are the ability to enhance material you are already using and less expense for students. Some challenges are quality issues and potential for intellectual property/copyright concerns. (Be sure and check out the learning module about Copyright).

This module will take approximately 18 minutes to complete.

    Why: It is important to recognize the many benefits for faculty and students when OER are used. This site provides several benefits, as well as links to over 750 free online courses.

    Time: Approximately 5 minutes.

    Why: It is also important to be aware of the challenges with OER. For example, how will some of the sites be sustained, since many were developed with one-time start-up funding.

    Time: Approximately 2 minutes.

  1. Participate in Module 9: Why OER Matters from Open Washington Open Educations Resources Network.Why: This is a bit of a review from the other two learning activities, however a good one. You could choose to just use this site to learn about the benefits and challenges of OER if you wish.Click HERE to access the website. Time: 10 minutes to complete if you just read and do not explore any of the additional resources available. We recommend digging deeper, since you will be amazed at what is available.
