Online Assessment

Overview/Purpose

In this module you will explore the concept of assessment in the online classroom. You can examine the challenges and solutions presented in this delivery method. It will include information about the importance of using self-assessment and peer assessment in the online environment – not only does it provide a great learning opportunity, it also provides an opportunity for students to interact in the online environment. Finally you will be introduced to the subject of rubrics and provided with sample rubrics you can use in your course.

    Why: Most of courses that are moved online, were once taught in the face-to-face delivery method, so you need to determine if you need to tweak or change your current assessments. This can present challenges, which are identified in this article, as well as solutions to the challenges.

    Why: The presenters in this video share different types of assessments you can use in an online course. They explain that most instructors think of quizzes, exams and written papers when discussing assessment in online courses, but they challenge you to think of different assessments. Their assessment suggestions can provide all students with an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of competency(ies).

    Why: This is an easy read that shares why the use of peer review in online courses can help instructors employ authentic and engaging assessments. It provides you with best practices and even better, gives you multiple example of assignments.

    Why: As you learned in the previous learning activity, self-assessment and peer assessment are great tools to use in online classes. This video show you how to set this up in our learning management system Blackboard.

    Why: This article provides you with a concise explanation of what a rubric is, why you should use them, and how to use them. It provides you with some rubric tools as well.

  1. Explore sample rubrics Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education.

    Why: If you have not used rubrics before, this will give you many examples to choose from. You use them or edit them to better meet your course’s needs. They have examples for case studies, class participation, critical thinking, essays, and many more.

    Time: 10 minutes or more, depending upon how many rubrics you examine.
