Service-Learning/Community Engagement Examples Below are actual Western Technical College examples of service-learning/community engagement activities. This is not a comprehensive list as many more activities occur during the year. Additionally, there is a variety of ways to serve and these methods are outlined in the first column. Ways to Serve Provide a Community Education Offering Fulfill a need for a community organization (Work with a client [community organization] to identify a need, which students can fulfill.) Assist with an ongoing need for a community organization Serve within a community organization (short-term volunteering) Advocacy/ Build awareness Actual Western Examples 3-5 students facilitate a beginner level workshop on a topic area related to their program of study (ex. basic computer) Actual Western Program Connection IT Computer Support Specialist Medical Administrative Professional Administrative Professional Class of students organize and conduct a service to the community (ex. mock interviewing, car checks, car-fit safety check, technology help desk) Automotive Occupational Therapy Assistant IT Computer Support Specialist Create an emergency shelter plan for dogs at an animal rescue facility Business Management Set up social media accounts and provide training for the community organization Develop and distribute surveys and compile data General Studies – Technical Reporting Write content for publications Create architectural drafts for houses that Habitat for Humanity will build Architectural Drafting Help at an event (related to program of study) where the community organization is providing a service to others (ex. La Crosse County sealant clinic) Dental Assistant Provide tips about the job search process General Studies – Applied Communications Serve at a community organization to expose oneself to course topics in action (ex.
