2016 Spring Graphic Design Student SLO Assessment Survey
Graphic Design Spring 2016 Student SLO Report Spring 2016 - Graphic Design May 2nd 2016, 1:39 pm CDT Q3 - What did you like about this program? The amount of time given to work on projects and the amount of feedback that was given to us students by the teacher when asked. Fantastically engaged and knowledgeable instructors who wanted to impart their wisdom. The creativity of projects. The classes allowed me to learn more on the field. They really taught me different design elements such as balance, color, and more. I was allowed creative freedom on my projects with a few restrictions on copyright. But, what I liked the most about this program was the teachers. They knew what they were talking about and looked like they wanted to help students on their projects by giving them advice. Their teachings only improved my design experience and interaction with my peers. All the instructors, classmates and the environment here in the program. When comparing these instructors with the gen ed instructors, the GD instructors are way more engaging and caring for the students. Other students in the program also help encourage each other. I liked that I could create whatever I wanted. I really liked working on all of the real-life projects that we needed a good amount of creativity and technical skills for. The skills I learned were all very useful for the projects we worked on and for future jobs (I assume). The teachers we all very helpful and pretty understanding! The technology used in the program was very nice and up-to-date, and it was nice that we had free printing in the Creative Lab. The graphic design program was awesome. I had a blast learning all the different things the course had to offer. The professors were good, good variety in teaching styles and course flow. I liked working on most projects for my classes. I liked the people and atmosphere Most of the teaching was good and fair Everything It helped me find my creative side I liked that there wasn't any tests. I also enjoyed being able to express my self creatively. Q4 - What would you change about this program? Nothing I can think of that needs to be changed. I would find a better color printer so we can actually print things. Put it in students heads to start thinking about their brand ID/branding themselves and make them use bechance sooner (like Xxxxx dose). It may not be even possible, but I wish there was an option to skip some general education classes in the Graphic Design program. It may be just me, but I feel some general ed classes are just there for little reason. Of course they are needed in a majority of programs, but the Graphic Design program should just have classes relating to the field. General ed classes just feel out of place since they do not relate to the field all that much. Get a bigger desk for the 2 MAC with the cintiq. The desk is way too small to draw on it comfortably. I recommend an L-shape desk. Guidelines that were strict so you ended up focusing more on the requirements, rather than the work. For example, I had an awesome project, but because I didn't do the brainstorm like drawings I got a 0. It's like that for a couple of classes. There's not much that I would change about the program, but if I could have one suggestion, it would be to have the instructors teach us more on how certain agencies and graphic design businesses/companies are set up and how the employees and designers work within each type of setting (how they run the business). This would help in the future when we're trying to find jobs and understanding what different positions would be like (and what it would be like at different businesses/companies). More classes geared towards Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, I feel one class isn't enough each. Maybe another class that blends the two together. Working utilities such as printers and cutters During critiques, more input from instructors would be better since all students arent on the same "level" Get another xerox printer Probably make more of the projects more portfolio based. Q6 - As a result of this program: Q6_1 - I have learned effective communication skills. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 7.14% 1 Agree 50.00% 7 Strongly Agree 42.86% 6 100% 14 Total Q7 - Provide any comments you have on effective communication skills you learned. Professor Xxxxx leads a lesson to prepare for both presentation of the portfolio and job interviews. I believe I've learned a bit more than expected about how to answer some difficult interview questions. I learned to open more to my peers and speak more clear so they understand what I'm saying. I'm aa timid shy kid back in high school, but here i feel at home with the instructors and students allowing me build up my confidence and self-esteem. Even though i'm still a bit anti-social to the outside world, it'd helped a lot. Speech class was awesome I have certainly gained some communication skills, I feel that I am not where I would like to be though being able to express my opinions in critiques. Q8 - As a result of this program: Q8_1 - I am able to apply mathematical concepts. Answer % Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree Count 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 14.29% 2 Agree 64.29% 9 Strongly Agree 21.43% 3 100% 14 Total Q9 - Provide any comments you have on mathematical concepts you learned. I came to this institution with sufficient mathematical knowledge... I feel that the mathematical lessons can apply to measuring things like folders to get the right cuts. 1+1=2 ? I hate math. I failed Geometry 3 times in high school but the college mathematics teacher was such a xxxxxxx teacher, and I cannot stress that enough. I did use some math with some of my graphic design projects, but I think it would be nice for instructors to touch a little more on mathematical abilities we'd need for projects and future jobs. I would have to say mathematically the only aspect i used was measurements Q10 - As a result of this program: - I learned how to transfer social and natural science theories into practical applications. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 7.69% 1 Disagree 7.69% 1 Neither Agree nor Disagree 46.15% 6 Agree 23.08% 3 Strongly Agree 15.38% 2 100% 13 Total Q11 - Provide any comments you have on transferring social and natural science theories into practical applications. We consider advertising's effects on society, so there's definitely a pinch of social sciences included, but there's not a whole ton of natural sciences involved in this program. The theories I learned can allow me to understand on how employees interact in the workplace. was science even in any of the gen eds? uhh racecar. Q12 - As a result of this program: Q12_1 - I learned critical thinking skills. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 7.14% 1 Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 7.14% 1 Agree 57.14% 8 Strongly Agree 28.57% 4 100% 14 Total Q13 - Provide any comments you have on critical thinking skills you learned. I believe the core function of this program is methodology, not critical thinking. The critical thinking skills I learned can help me in my time management skills. You're liberals. Being able to make changes on my projects to protect it. Q14 - As a result of this program: Q14_1 - I have learned to use technology effectively. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.33% 1 Agree 16.67% 2 Strongly Agree 75.00% 9 100% 12 Total Q15 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about using technology effectively. The graphic design program does a fantastic job teaching software skills. I wish there were even more in depth technically oriented software teaching classes. Learning how to use technology effectively helped me since I can now use it to organize my files better. The teachers provided navigation through program tools that were helpful. Q16 - As a result of this program: - I have learned to value myself and work ethically with others in a diverse population. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 8.33% 1 Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 0.00% Agree 50.00% 6 Strongly Agree 41.67% 5 100% 12 Total Q17 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about valuing yourself and working ethically with others in a diverse population. I learned a lot about copyright regulations in this program. My peers gave me feedback on my projects and how to improve them, which lead to high quality projects. Working with many different students helped me tolerate people more than ever. I don't care what people think. Q18 - As a result of this program: - I am able to make decisions that incorporate the importance of sustainability. Answer % Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree Count 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 23.08% 3 Agree 53.85% 7 Strongly Agree 23.08% 3 100% 13 Total Q19 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about incorporating the importance of sustainability in decisions you make. After I have learned about sustainability in my decisions, I can make choices that help get closer to making the deadlines. Well I play Fallout so I value decision making. It would be nice to learn how to be more sustainable in this program (it's not a huge part of this career field, but it could be touched on a bit in class I guess!) Q21 - As a result of this program, I learned to: - apply the principles of design to develop strategic marketing and communication products and services. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 7.14% 1 Agree 50.00% 7 Strongly Agree 42.86% 6 100% 14 Total Q22 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. We do several branding projects that focus on making effective marketing materials for a target market. The classes provided helped me learn how to effectively market products for any company I might work for in the future. It's the critiques that help improve projects Building my portfolio. Q23 - As a result of this program, I learned to: - demonstrate proficiency in the use of design software, tools and technology. Answer % Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree Count 0.00% Agree 35.71% 5 Strongly Agree 64.29% 9 100% 14 Total Q24 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. That's what this program is all about, and it seems to do it with great success. With the knowledge I have gained, I can now get better used to the software I use in future projects. The final classes were a bit frustrating. Just one of the classes though. I think we should be taught more about press operating Q25 - As a result of this program, I learned to: - implement creative solutions from concept through completion using a formal process. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 8.33% 1 Agree 50.00% 6 Strongly Agree 41.67% 5 100% 12 Total Q26 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. The program teaches a formal process for concept to completion of projects. I can now properly draft my ideas out and evolve them over time for a final result. Yeah this is annoying. Q27 - As a result of this program, I learned to: - apply effective legal and ethical business practices and project management skills. Answer % Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree Count 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 15.38% 2 Agree 46.15% 6 Strongly Agree 38.46% 5 100% 13 Total Q28 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. Answer % Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree Count 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 28.57% 4 Agree 42.86% 6 Strongly Agree 28.57% 4 100% 14 Total Q32 - Provide any comments you have about learning this program outcome. I felt nervous talking to clients before taking this program, but I now know that I should say things that relate to the field, which can ease the burden of what to say to clients. oh There's not too many classes or projects that we get to collaborate directly with clients (besides the teacher), so it might be nice for teachers to allow us to do that a little more (if possible). just a little bit Q33 - CONCLUSION Please use this space to share any other feedback, comments, or suggestions about your experience at Western Technical College. My experience here at Western Technical College wasn't at all what I expected. The teachers I have had made my experience horrible. There were only 3 out of the many teachers I had here that I truly thought knew what was best for the students and actually wanted us to succeed, the others didn't care and just sat back and didn't know what they were doing. Please fix the color printer or find some other solution to the issue of printing being regularly impossible. Whether it be finding a new company to provide IT services or a new printer that has software that is compatible with the school's system, I'm sure there are potential options for you if you are willing to put your proverbial foot down. It's extremely stressful not knowing from day to day whether it will or won't work. Maybe have somewhere that helps students see different teachers' teaching styles, so try can try and be placed with the teachers that they would fit best with, without having to fight to get through a class with someone that teaching style doesn't really work for them. All of the teachers I had where nice and willing to try and help, but some where easier to get the lessons from because their style of teaching fit with my leaning style. The instructors I had were willing to help me improve upon my work and my social skills. After I leave, I can take what I learned and apply my skills to the Graphic Design field. Get an L-shaped desk. Get a new wacom cintiq and sell the old to students. The courses themselves were great, instructors were great. Overall I was pleased. I am rather upset with the constant construction though. Through my entire time here at Western TC I didn't have a day that there wasn't construction. Now this wasn't always an issue but when it was an issue, it was a major issue. I've had many classes stopped, lectures had to be put on hold. Classes that couldn't continue due to toxic fumes. Constant banging noises all last year. All these things were major issues to me and I don't feel that paying full price for tuition is reasonable. I wasn't given the full education I was promised for what I payed. I get that these things need to happen for future classes but it was obnoxious to the point of frustration. There should be some money given back to select classes I feel. My name is Samuel XXXX, I plan to write another email concerning this issue. Please contact me regarding this. xxx-xxx-xxxx, email@example.com Thank you. It was a great experience for me in the Graphic Design program and I had fun learning. 7/10 More sports Overall I'm happy with the choice i made choosing this program.
