2016 Spring Marketing Student SLO Assessment Survey
Marketing Spring 2016 Student SLO Report Spring 2016 – Marketing May 2nd 2016, 2:54 pm CDT Q3 - What did you like about this program? The ability to work with area businesses, the attention to trends in the marketing world and the ability to be creative while still learning valuable business practices. Coming into this program I had no idea that I would learn this much about how customers shop and their behaviors. It was a major learning experience for me and enjoyed every bit of it. Throughout my years, I built great relationships with classmates and teachers that will last a life time. I'm excited to see what the future holds for me. I like that there are a lot of possible ways to use it and a large variety of classes afterward. I really appreciate that the instructors were always willing to work with a busy schedule and make it work to help us graduate, and that they have worked in the field and have a lot of experience. They got to know each student individually and genuinely cared about if we needed help. I love that marketing lets you be both creative and strategic, it combines psychological pieces and art. I loved how hands on we were. We worked with so many local businesses and got to do things that other programs are not able to. I also think Pam and Shelly are great teachers. The flexibility, it allowed me to continue to work full time and still have ample time for homework. The program was an insight to a lot of things I would have never thought about had I not enrolled. For instance, buying behaviors, one major aspect I was looking forward to was seeing the other side of the sales process, and this program goes into great depth on explaining that. I loved the whole experience working with real companies and creating all the marketing plans and promotional pieces. I loved the friends I've made and the opportunities that have been introduced while in this program. I liked my classmates as well as the skills it gave me to effectively communicate I liked the instructors and the way they challenged us. They taught us to get through deadlines and didn't "hold our hand" when it came to figuring things out for ourselves. I also loved the students I was surrounded by, it made learning so much better because I was comfortable with those around me. I enjoyed the marketing program and the bond i created with my classmates. Hands-on experience Open communication with Pam Working with real businesses It taught me a lot about the business world and how to get ready for interviews to be prepared with questions so that it goes smoother. I like being able to work with businesses from the area on marketing plans I loved that we got to work with local businesses for our hands-on experience. I really enjoyed learning about the Marketing materials and learning more about my strengths and weaknesses within the program. The friends that I made. It gave me good skills in all career jobs that I am interested in, not only did it give me the skills needed to perform the job, but also external life skills such as attendance, time management, etc. I liked the hands-on learning experience, as well as small class sizes. small class sizes There was a lot of hands on projects which I was able to gain a lot of experience from. Hands on, group projects with local businesses. Hands on learning and constantly working with groups. Working with local businesses. Q4 - What would you change about this program? More class times and more variety when it comes to graphics. Both the marketing instructors have 2 different teaching styles that are hard to correlate and go back n forth. They should try and get on the same page, so the students don't get so confused. I would have liked to learn about business ethics, and I think it would be helpful to learn more about why people think the way that they do rather than just learning how to find someone else's data on it. To better undestand the customer. I also wish in graphic design, for marketing at least, it should be focused on practicing making promotions and then the existing logo assignment and focus less on how to color correct images, etc. because that isn't something that marketers will use much. But knowing the basics on how to create a promotion would be extremely helpful. I think that the ethics class should not be required. Or perhaps a business ethics class could be created to fill that spot. I feel this way because all we did was talk about ethical theories. It seemed like a waste of time and money. I don't feel graphics of design was very helpful for me. I think that the class should be "dumbed" down a little. I feel we did a lot of things in that class that we will never use. I would rearrange seminar/digital marketing to allow the ability to work on more analytics for social media. there is no need for orientation to marketing, get a graphics teacher that can teach. there are way to many busy work assignments. Maybe more teachers. We already have some great teachers but we could use a few more for more class availability and take a few workloads off our current instructors. I would change the classes "personal branding" and "Seminar of Marketing" because as of right now those classes didn't help me at all or hold any pertinent marketing information. Open communication with Shelly Not as long of classes. I would change the order of some classes so that we could take personal branding before the last semester. I would change the marketing seminar class and promotion principles class because I found we needed more time for these classes. Towards the end, everything was rushed and I felt we didn't effectively used what we learned because we lost too much time. I would make it more organized. Graphics programs, websites, binders should be worked on early in the program, so then we can use our skills to improve, update, and maintain the preceding items. How the teachers schedule their semesters. Why is Personal Branding taken as the last semester our resumes and cover letters should be completed before the last semester. Less time spent with generals, most of my generals were rather pointless to go through and I could have used that time on more important core classes. I would update some course content in some of the classes, to make it seem more relevant to our futures. less presentations Possibly the order of the classes Some software is out of date.- Survey Crafter Tailor some classes more towards digital media Q6 - As a result of this program: Q6_1 - I have learned effective communication skills. It was helpful to learn how to email in a business format as that is what happens when you enter the real world. We do a LOT of group work, so that forces you to learn how to communicate with coworkers appropriately. We also wrote a lot of really in depth reports, so that was great practice as well. I learned to always back up what I say with follow up information and that i can't just say something without supporting it. I practice these on a daily basis in my new career. Public speaking skills Interview mannerisms I have learned how to write press releases, social media posts, and overall papers. Marketing Financials was really in depth. I enjoyed my business math class and learned a lot. In addition, marketing financials was really useful, even though i don't like finance classes. Marketing financials helped me learn more of the business side math. I suck at math. Math with Business Apps was the best class I've ever had! In high school I hated math and in fact, I failed a math class and this class in the past with an A/B which was a huge accomplishment. The selling class was very confusing- it was as if we knew the principals of selling and were expected to jump right in. a BIG thanks to Pam Culver for helping us and making us do mock interviews and business trial settings. Even though it was nerve wracking, it made it easier to deal with customers at my current place of employment. Q29 - CONCLUSION Please use this space to share any other feedback, comments, or suggestions about your experience at Western Technical College. Overall, Pam and Shelly were great instructors that I learned a lot from over the last 2 years. I really loved this program, I thought it was really in depth and thorough. Pam and Shelly are wonderful teachers who have a lot of teaching abilities. Shelly and Pam are fantastic teachers! They truly care about their students and love helping us grow as Marketing Students and as better human beings in general! its been real, its been fun; but not real fun. If you want to finish your degree in 2 years I suggest taking summer classes. The majority of the classes i took here at western were quite information and enjoyable for me but if i could change anything i would restructure "personal branding", "seminar in marketing", "Fundamentals of Graphics Design" because as of now there ins't enough reason to pay the course fee other than it is a required course. Shelly needs to grade assignments in more of a timely fashion. If she wants us to "practice being professional like the real world," then she needs to practice what she preaches. If we have a due date, and harps about it, then she should be returning our work in a timely manner. Pam seems like a hard ass, but she teaches strategy. The first year, everyone is "scared" of her, but I appreciate everything that she has done for us! There are times when the grades of assignments were not put in in a timely manner. That is something that frustrates not only me, but a lot of my classmates. I would appreciate to know my grade at least a week after it was due, not a couple days before the semester is done. Thank you, Pam and Shelly! And Western! It was a good run, thank you, and I cannot wait to be done. I had a great experience in the Marketing Program where I gained valuable skills that will help me be successful in a marketing career. I really enjoyed the Marketing Program. I very happy that I chose to join this program and I excelled in all classes. Change the layout of the billing sheet students see on My Western. It is confusing and students have no idea what most of the information is.
