2016 Spring IT Web & Software Developer Student SLO Assessment Survey
IT Web and Software Developer Spring 2016 SLO Spring 2016 - IT Web & Software Developer May 2nd 2016, 11:06 am CDT Q3 - What did you like about this program? The fact that there will always be more and new things to learn and learning the skills that give me the ability to create anything I can think of. The only limit I will have is the limit of my own imagination. I liked the variety of classes. I feel like most of the teachers were very helpful and knowledgeable about the topics. I like working with computers and I'm more suited for logical pursuits than graphical projects. It gave me a little bit about everything I enjoyed the instructors and enjoyed learning about programming. Q4 - What would you change about this program? I would add a third web development class. There is so much to learn and because everything is crammed into 2 classes it can become overly difficult toget a firm grasp on all of the material. I wish the IT internship class was full semester and included a few weeks of actually go out to one designated business to work as an intern. We had to take a Gen Eds Class, Math with Business Applications, that did nothing to contribute to my education. The math skills that were taught were so basic that I'd learned every bit of them by sophomore year of High School. As a programmer, I would expect to learn more complex types of math than balancing a checkbook or calculating compound interest. We'd already written programs that used those concepts before I'd even taken that class. I believe that my tuition money was wasted on such a simple class. More work time in class so we can apply what we learned. It would change the mindset that we're coming in to listen to a lecture about whatever is going on. I would change the order of some of that classes. I think they already did that after this semester. Q6 - As a result of this program: I have learned effective communication skills. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 0.00% Agree 40.00% 2 Strongly Agree 60.00% 3 Total 100% 5 Q7 - Provide any comments you have on effective communication skills you learned. I learned to work better in groups and my writing skills greatly improved. I've always been pretty good about communicating effectively, but there wasn't much this program did for me in that regard. Q8 - As a result of this program: Q8_1 - I am able to apply mathematical concepts. Answer % Count Strongly Disagree 0.00% Disagree 0.00% Neither Agree nor Disagree 0.00% Agree 20.00% 1 Strongly Agree 80.00% 4 Total 100% 5 Q9 - Provide any comments you have on mathematical concepts you learned. I have always been good at math, but it was a great refresher. I definitely learned how to apply math to abstract projects to produce the intended result. Q33 - CONCLUSION Please use this space to share any other feedback, comments, or suggestions about your experience at Western Technical College. Thank you Western for giving me a good solid experience I had a wonderful experience. I had been out of school for several years and was nervous to go back. Until now, I only had my GED and went right into the military. The staff at Western made me feel comfortable and provided me with the tools I need to earn my Associates degree and I could not be happier. I now have the chance to make my family proud and earn a good living. It was a good school, most teachers were effective and helped with my education. I really wish (and mentioned off and on...didn't want to step on anyone's toes though) that half the time would have been lecture and the other half us applying whatever we learned in that class or that week or whatever. It would have made it more job-like to be able to continually apply in the classroom with others there and the instructor rather then doing it on your own, on your own time, or trying to work thru everyone's work schedules to find time. I think the curriculum and class structure really needs to change and become more streamilned. Half learning/instructing and half us applying the concepts (we think) we learned.
