2. What would you change about this program?
Text Response
This program needs to have more preparation for firefighters to be placed directly into the fire
service after graduation. Things that are needed are an IFSAC certified hazmat technician
course, and a certified CPAT test. Also the fitness for firefighter course either needs to be
significantly changed or removed from the coursework for graduation. These courses have no
goals or directives and ultimately do nothing for the success of the students graduating. In fact
the added stress load, and unregulated coursework of these courses causes a loss in focus in
other classes. If a cpat was administered in the end, and the lectures were removed from this
class then it would be worth it. Also, the college needs to establish relationships with
departments in the area for internships. Make the process of interning easier, with no doubt in
whether or not we will be able to each year. Finally, if courses do not require hands on or use of
the training facilities in Sparta make class in lacrosse. The cost of gas for students is becoming
outrageous and unneeded .
Western should set fire students up better with CPAT and work with us on internships. I feel the
dean of public safety just pushes us to the side and doesn't care of what happen's with our
future.

If i could change something about the program I would suggest more hands on training for the
second year.

I did not learn anything in college math, the required course for this program. It was basic
highschool math. It would be nice to have a math class that incooperated pump calculations.

My overall experience was below average. My first year was great I learned about what it would
be like to be in the fire service. Mr. Billings was organised and knew when state tests were
given and he also knew what was going to be on the tests and clearly explained all of that
important information to us students. For my second year on the other hand was different, Both
Beau and Steve were superior teachers and were extremely knowledgeable. My problem came
when setting up internships for the summer, what i needed to take my pumper operator practical
test, and what needed to be done after the fire inspector job shadow. Here at western
technical college I am set to graduate with my associate degree and all of the certificates i need
to be a fire fighter but I still feel unprepared for the real word. This program needs to have
more preparation for firefighters to be placed directly into the fire service after graduation.
