1. What did you like about this program?
Text Response
I liked that the classes were mostly on-line, thus enabling me to work and attend school.
I liked the on line aspect as I work. You should clone Susan Summerfield. She is an excellent
Instructor and I enjoyed her classes very much!
I liked the few online classes.
I liked the fact that most classes for this program are online and I was able to get my degree
while working a full time job. The instructors replied to any questions very quickly through
emails.
I like the ability to do most of my coursework from home.
The classes were mostly online
It's a broad, practical exposure to the knowledge and skills needed to enter the HIT field.

2. What would you change about this program?
Text Response
As much as I liked the idea that the classes were on-line I would have liked a little more class
room time with some of the classes.
I did not like all the face to face classes we had for the class HIM Organizational Resources.
Many of those activities could have been done on line or via a chat board. When students work
it is really hard to get time off. 3-5 face to face classes are enough per semester for an online
class. 13-15 is WAYYYY too many. The bulletin board assignments were very juvenile. Some
of us did most of the work, while others did not particiapte. They could be replaced with more
activites like the brochure project where you use software to produce something.
90% of the students also work full time. Get this program 100% online. I am pulling my hair out
going to school full time and making time to make it to class 1 to 2 times a week.
Some if the clinical sites were somewhat far away, but I do understand this was necessary due
to the number of facilities willing to participate.
I would like to see more class meetings for the actual coding courses since some of that work is
rather complicated, espeically the Applied Coding course.
Some homework wasn't explained properly
I think some classes would benefit the students with more in-person instruction, such as
statistics, and the coding classes.

Text Response
I had strong communication skills before starting this program but I think it does teach
communication skills.
I have learned how to communicate effectively with medical providers regarding deficiencies in
medical records as well as how to query medical professionals in order to reach an effective
diagnosis on a patient.
I got exposure to using Powerpoint and creating group presentations, which I did not have
before.

I thought the Quality class helped me in that area.
This program teaches HIT skills that healthcare facilities no longer do. For example, paper chart
filing. I learned so much that was a waste of time.
We used what we learned in Anatomy and Physiology in many, even most of our classes.

Text Response
The class presented me with issues that gave me cause to research and think about the issues
that I researched.
The coding class helped me develop critical thinking skills. My PPE 2 Clinical and Healthcare
Law and Ethics also helped me to do the same.
I think I sharpened my skills and learned about how to apply them to some of the issues and
problems that can arise in healthcare.

The on line aspect of the program really helped with learning technology.
I got a lot of exposure to computer technologies that I had not been using much, or at all,
previously, including Microsoft Office programs, how to navigate online classes, and various
programs used in healthcare.

I need to put my needs above others if want to accomplish my goals.
I had those skills before starting the program but I agree it teached those skills to students who
are willing to learn them
We discussed ethical issues in the HIT profession many times. Ethical and professional
behavior was very much emphasized.

I learned to manage health data in 1980....not 2014.
What I would say about all the program outcomes and the reason I select "agree" rather than
"strongly agree", is just that we cover so much material in the program and I feel I won't really
have a handle on it all until I am actually working in the field.

27. CONCLUSION - Please use this space to share any other
feedback, comments, or suggestions about your experience
at Western Technical College.
Text Response
I enjoyed my education at Western Technical College. Being involved with various aspects of
the college was also very useful and made my education more fun and interesting.
The clinical experience is what I was able to use to apply skills learned in calss. I very much
enjoyed the clinical and will never forget the friends I made and what I learned. I would and
have recommended this program to others.
Tamra is so out of touch with what happens in healthcare and it shows in her poor teaching
skills. She also has no understanding or empathy of what it is like to work full time and go to
school full time.
Susan is a wonderful instructor and person. She has so much HIT
experience that she brings into every assignment and classroom experience. She is a
wonderful motivator to make you excited about the material.
I have really enjoyed my time as a student at Western. All the staff are very helpful, and in my
specific program, the instructors are top-notch in every way. They have gone out of their way to
answer questions and help me understand the different concepts needed in the HIT program.
In general, I find Western to be a wonderful school. I believe the environment is friendly and
accepting of all persons regardless of their age, gender, race or personal career choices. I do
not feel that many local 4-year colleges can offer this same great atmosphere. Western is
supportive of its' students and always helps them be successful. Thank you Western faculty
and fellow students!
I was very happy at how responsive the instructors were. I never had to wait long to get a reply
to any questions I had. I really feel the instructors have the students' best interests at heart and
want to see us succeed.
