Q3 - What did you like about this program?
The fact that I learned things.
I liked a lot of the hands on experience and the clinical rotations to help and cement the technical aspects.
I loved the hands on work. I believe that the program helped prepare me for real life work. I was at UWL and I
feel that they lack real life hand on experience like WTC. I like how the program has Fridays off.
I loved the people and made lots of new friends. I enjoyed the material and am looking forward to working in this
field.
You get the hands on experience right away and immediately start learning information that is directly related to
the career. That makes it easier to keep your end-goal in mind and motivate yourself through the 2 years.
I really liked that we were told about certain types of questions on the BOC exam. I also liked that the instructors
were willing to work with the students and help as much as they possibly could.
Switching from UWL to Western I really enjoyed the change of pace with all of the hands on experience I had in
the classroom as well as during my many hours of clinical.
I like this program because I have always been a fan of the sciences. Most science degrees are not very hands on
though. This program is extremely hands on which is my favorite part.
I like that there are a lot of hands on things to do and also that we learn to draw blood on each other.

Q4 - What would you change about this program?
Working 40 hours a week for free, and then being berated when with site on schedule changes to make life easier.
Some of the instruments were broken or unavailable for the types of assays we should run. I understand that
there are absolute limitations due to funding or unavailable software/parts for older instruments but for future
generations having the technology available for current assay tests will help better prepare the next generation of
techs
I would change the passing policies. I had students tell me they should not have pass certain classes but were
allowed "freebies or free passing grade even though they should not have applied." I worked hard for my grades,
other should have to work just as hard as me, not given a free passing grade. That is academic dishonesty from
the program which should not be allowed.
I am not sure. I thought it was great.
I loved the program, however I like what they are doing this next year with changing the program to start in the
spring semester, making graduation in the fall and giving students first grabs at open jobs. That way they don't
have to compete with 4 years in the spring.
I would change some things about clinical, like having someone in charge of students who works with students or
can check in with them to see how things are going.
I would change the fact that if you work at a certain facility you should be able to do your clinical there. It would
allow you to be able to actually work during your clinical experience.
If i could change anything about the program, It would probably fall within the last semester. We are extremely
over burdened with homework and 40 hour clinical weeks. It can get extremely stressful.

Q7 - Provide any comments you have on effective communication skills you learned.
I have the same communication skills as before.
I believe being placed into clinical rotations and having a well meshing class has helped develop some of the soft
communication skills. What is appropriate and where.
I believe I already had good communications skills before the program.
I believe I was already good with communication skills, so I feel as if I have improved from this program.
We are forced at times to be very vocal which helps with our communication skills

Q9 - Provide any comments you have on mathematical concepts you learned.
I could do it before this program.
I always had a strong mathematical background, the way it was delivered I may change a bit. Almost like physics, I
believe it would be very helpful to have ALL of the equations used throughout the program on a sheet of
laminated paper that a student can carry with them throughout the whole program. In addition a sheet with all of
the reference ranges for various analytes or cellular products would be helpful.
I was originally going to UWL for mathematics so I was already able to apply mathematical concepts.

Yes
I felt that the clinical rotation helps lead a person on a bit more. In addition certain classes require strong critical
analysis to prosper. It certainly helps to create a study group with a student who intimately understands the
material and can ask the leading questions to cause greater critical analysis within their peers.
It helped with real life critical thinking.

Q15 - Provide any comments you have on what you learned about using technology
effectively.
My internships taught me how to use their analyzers, so did XXXXX and XXXXX.
Even as a millennial, we are mainly steeped in technology since birth. It is an easy aspect to understand.
I have always be great with technology, but I feel that I can use my skills to teach the older generation who are
not as well adapted to technology.
I know we don't have a huge budget, but all of the instruments just happened to stop working when we finally got
to use them. So most of our training was done at clinical, but some of us didn't get to change sites or go to larger
sites so I feel a little limited as far as how much I know for instrumentation.
Sometimes we didn't have instruments to practice with or had really outdated analyzers.
I was already really good with technology, so this program didn't change anything regarding technology.
Some of our analyzers and techniques are outdated

I always appreciated honest feedback upon my performance. Hearing someone else say positive things about me
means far more than any test score or how I may feel.

Maybe we could have more focus on specimen processing, even though it's pretty easy to learn, a little
background would be nice before clinicals.

A lot of the tests we did were with QC in place of patient results, so we hit two birds with one stone.

Some methods feel outdated, I understand that the board still uses some of this information but as time goes by it
would be nice to eliminate what will not be seen or used anymore.
We didn't really have any instruments to practice troubleshooting.

Q35 - CONCLUSION Please use this space to share any other feedback, comments, or
suggestions about your experience at Western Technical College.
Waste too much time talking about random things in class. Could probably cut 30 minutes out if we were just kept
on track. It is terrible we are required to come in on Friday for an all day class. The banked hours idea was a mess
and wasn't worth it. I was told they didn't have it when they were in school. Well then don't have it now. Don't
promise things to students then take it back or make them feel bad for not understanding. The teacher needs to
make her own decisions and not always rely on the answers of another teacher. We as students make decisions
and the teacher should not be afraid to make decisions either, it's life, make a decision and stick with it. We kept
being told it was the teachers first time through. That's fine it's our first time too, but it shouldn't be an excuse for
everything. Own up to what you are unsure of and promise to find out the answer of the question you don't
know. Don't just say I don't know it's my first time, or ask the other teacher. Otherwise the teachers are in
general very nice and usually try to help as much as they can. One on one time is very good and useful. I would do
this again, but I would NEVER do this last semester ever if I can help it. It has been the worst time of the program
so far.
I feel that the last semester should be limited to only the 40 hour clinical rotation.
My experience was good overall. I am just not happy with how some students were allowed to graduate/move on
in the program when they did not keep up their 75% test average for the program.
I have really enjoyed my time here and am going to miss everyone and the faculty a great deal.
Thanks for a great 2 years! I feel very prepared and optimistic about the future.
I really enjoyed this program and feel as if it has truly benefited me to work in a lab in the future.

I really enjoyed this program and would recommend it to anyone that would like to work in the lab!
