Spring 2017 Physical Therapist Assistant Faculty SLO Survey Q3 - What do you think your students liked best about your program? Students enjoy the hands on learning format of the program. The amount of lab time available to work on psychomotor skills/ competencies is enjoyable. The three faculty have different teaching styles which complements a number of students as well. Q4 - What do you think your students would like to see changed in your program? Students have expressed desire for increased content on manual skills and general pathology. They would like to see exploration of using Interpersonal communication as a complimentary general ed credit versus speech. They feel the interpersonal communication course aligns better with the communication skills required in the job. Q5 - How many students will graduate from your program this trimester? 16 Q7 - How many graduates are able to use effective communication skills? 16 Q8 - Provide any comments you have on effective communication skills taught in this program. Formal, informal, therapeutic, and non-therapeutic skills are developed. Non-verbal skills are also practiced with the most feedback needed regarding non-verbal messages (tone, volume, pace, facial expressions, etc...). Q9 - How many graduates are able to apply mathematical concepts? 16 Q10 - Provide any comments you have on the application of mathematical concepts taught in this program. Minimal math concepts needed in terms of calculation. However, higher level math concepts that are associated with physics is a requirement in Kinesiology courses and in Modalities. Q11 - How many graduates are able to transfer social and natural science theories into practical applications? 16 Q12 - Provide any comments you have on transferring social and natural science theories into practical applications, and how it is taught in this program. The entire program is application of natural science (anatomy and physiology and physics). It is also the application of social science with heavy emphasis on psychology and sociology concepts. Q13 - How many graduates are able to use critical thinking skills? 16 Q14 - Provide any comments you have on critical thinking skills taught in this program. Critical thinking skills are assessed in classroom and clinical thinking skills are assessed in the clinic. The clinical thinking skills cannot be demonstrated without applying critical thinking to the situation/ patient. Q15 - How many graduates are able to use technology effectively? 16 Q16 - Provide any comments you have on how using technology effectively is taught in this program. All students in this cohort were comfortable with technology. Q17 - How many graduates are able to value themselves and work ethically with others in a diverse population? 16 Q18 - Provide any comments you have on how valuing one's self and working ethically with others in a diverse population is taught in this program. All graduates able to demonstrate behaviors consistent with legal, ethical standards in the field and able to demonstrate the Value Based Behaviors for an entry level PTA. Q19 - How many graduates are able to make decisions that incorporate the importance of sustainability? 16 Q20 - Provide any comments you have on how incorporating the importance of sustainability in the decisions one makes is taught in this program. Fiscal responsibility and responsible use of resources is emphasized most in this area. Q22 - How many graduates are able to demonstrate effective communication with patients, families, and health care team? 16 Q23 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates met required outcomes on assessment tools related to this skill in the clinic. Q24 - How many graduates are able to exhibit behaviors and conduct that reflect respect and sensitivity according to physical therapy practice standards? 16 Q25 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates followed legal, ethical and professional standards. They demonstrated behaviors of respect for all patients and persons they interacted with . Q26 - How many graduates are able to function under the supervision of a physical therapist in a safe, legal, ethical manner? 16 Q27 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates were able to function in the role of the PTA by the end of their terminal clinical. Q28 - How many graduates are able to produce documentation to support the delivery of physical therapy services? 16 Q29 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. Able to document on paper and in electronic format. Documentation was noted as a strength for all of the graduates when meeting with clinical instructors. Q30 - How many graduates are able to demonstrate critical thinking skills to implement and adjust a plan of care under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist? 16 Q31 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates able to make appropriate decisions related to the plan of care and able to determine when the PT needs to be notified of any changes needed to the plan of care. Q32 - How many graduates are able to perform technically competent data collection under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist? 16 Q33 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates were able to collect required data in the every day scope of work of a PTA. Q34 - How many graduates are able to perform technically competent physical therapy interventions under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist? 16 Q35 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates met requirements related to interventions. Q36 - How many graduates are able to educate patients, family and other providers? 16 Q37 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates had opportunity to demonstrate this in the clinical setting. Q38 - How many graduates are able to integrate components of administrative, operational and fiscal practices of physical therapy service in a variety of settings? 16 Q39 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All graduates explored billing and coding for services. Basic overview of administrative, operational practices were covered in each site. Q40 - How many graduates are able to implement a self-directed plan for career development, credentialing, and lifelong learning? 16 Q41 - Provide any comments you have about teaching this program outcome. All students completed requirements related to future planning. Q43 - Consider this class of graduating students, what was most challenging for the faculty in your program? This cohort had a number of behavioral issues- from the first semester to the last. There were a number of students with personal issues as well which led them to walk away from the program or contributed to their lack of success in the program. The number and frequency of issues was more than other years which was emotionally exhausting for faculty. Q44 - Please use this space to share any other feedback, comments, or suggestions about your experience teaching in this program this past trimester. Definite need for life coaches or counseling at the HSC where there can be a direct connection for students who are struggling with issues. Students referred across campus to counseling don't often make it there.
