OVERALL EXPERIENCE
1. What did you like about this program?
Text Response
I like how everything was hands on to get the work like experience in an educational way.
The course teaches you all of the basic that one would need to know to have a great start in a
career of machining. Although a single year course cannot teach you everything, i feel that i
know enough that i can begin a career in machining right out of school and learn more while i
am working. I feel like knowing how to machine parts gives me an ability to make anything in
the world.
I liked the manual classes in this program.
I liked the amount of material I have learned in the time I have been here. The instructors are
some of the nicest teachers around the campus. The cnc aspect of the class is proably the
most useful of the whole program.
the manual shop days, being able to problem solve and figure things out on my own. i also
liked seeing the outcome of my actions on the machines and seeing a finished part.
Overall experience is good! The amount I learned is pretty impressive. Also due to the
program I was employed in the field before the end of the first semester! The one year
program is a good thing too.
The experience that both teachers have. Both teachers have great knowledge of the subject.
tod shaws math class
i liked the background knowledge of machining i gained. i enjoyed the students in my
program. i enjoyed being tought by one of my instructors.
I liked that though the course was tough for me, I was able to accomplish it with enough hard
work and dedication to studying. I learned that the machining field I have gotten involved in is
more difficult than I had at first anticipated but I'm learning how to do it and feel a great sense
of accopmplishment.

2. What would you change about this program?
Text Response
No
With two different instructors for manual and cnc machines, each one may provide a different
point of view on how things may be done. it may cause some confusion but i believe two
different instructors is a must.
I would change the pace of the class and add more of your own projects.
I would change the manual classes to all cnc classes and make the same projects with the
same teachers in their repsected classes. If I were doing this program, i would have it so that
the students would have to do everything, from setup to operation and inspection.
i would switch it back to a 2 semester program. after 2 semesters it gets to be pretty repetitive
and lacking of interest. this is going to be a long summer.......
Book prices are steep for the amout of usage we got out of several of them. Some of the
work in some of the classses seemed a little silly.
The way one of the teachers talks to students can be very disrespectful . Have better
directions in the CAM program.
if it didnt start at 6:50 every morning that would be awesome
I would change how multiple courses were run. the cnc courses with a certain instructor i
dreaded coming to. we were constantly chastised for doing things just slightly different than
what was tought. constantly being looked over our shoulders as working and making us feel
stupid if we didnt know the answer to one of her questions immediately. i was put down in
front of my classmates on several occasions. The instructor single handedly ruined that part
of my experience at this college. i would not reccomend this program or school to anyone i
know. also there needs to be some sort of conformity between instructors. it is a constant
battle whether to follow what you have learned from one instructor to the other. and again if
you chose incorrectly you were chastised by this instructor for doing something wrong. The
instructor was hypocritical about using foul language - would yell at one student for swearing
and saying would remove one point for every cus word but had no problem letting foul
language out of own mouth on occasion. i hate coming to this instructor’s classes and am not
looking forward to the upcoming seven weeks where i have class with everyday. i could go on
and on about the displeasures and disappointments this program has brought be because of
this isntructors teaching style. i feel as though i could have learned more in the machining
field if i would have continued working full time in a shop.
I spent $140 on a USED textbook that I ended up using twice (to complete/read two
chapters). It would have been more beneficial to me if the college would have made copies
(for educational purposes) if our insructor had only intended to utilize the text book for two
chapters and I would have been allowed to save me some money.

learned how to interpret blueprints and features
I'm not sure I understand the question as this is not an English Grammar course. I've learned
that there's a definite "shop grammar/way of explaining things" that I'm not very accomplished
in speaking, but I did not necessarily learn how to communicate more effectively.

Our math teacher was excellent. although some of our math was in different spots during the
math course and our shop courses whatever we were taught by our math teacher it was easy
to relate it to the shop.
When we are learning hidden dimensions, i think they should introduce us to trig functions at
that time instead of learning it down the course.

we learn the same thing from beginning to end. i mean it varies in the application but i know
about the same amount as i did at the beginning of the program
Though I have learned a great deal about maching, too much of this program/class material
seems to be "crammed" in such a short session that I find it diffucult to believe that any of my
classmates (myself incuded) have retained much information, which seems to be proven in
some of the class projects that we've done. I, myself, am one that retains information easier
with repetative, hands-on experience. Much of the course material seems to be, "Here it is,
don't forget it..." only.

do more work with the gd&t course. i was very disappointed in how that was tought.
My firts semester instuctor was an instructor who had been newly hired and apparently didn't
have his own ciriculum. I do not believe that I learned as much as I was supposed to have
and in many ways feel like I'm lagging behind the rest of my classmates (who had another
instructor for the same course).

theres so much material on g codes that i dont feel is necessary. most shops will not have
you programming cnc machines from scratch, a program called mastercam or feature cam is
generally used
with the constant overlooking and not being allowed to work with the machines comfortably
and at our own pace i didnt get that much time with the machines. there were days i would sit
and observe someone all day long and only two people got to touch machines after 8 hours
because she has to watch and approve every little thing you do which slows down the
process when youre wating for her to finish watching the other student and come to watch
you.. disappointed to say the least.

This is a hard concept to grasp in class because without years of expierence its hard to know
what tooling to chose for certain projects. In our shop we use the limited resources we have,
and out in the job world their is so many different tools that this can be challenging to learn.
everyday
This is no fault of the intructor(s), rather that again, much of the material was either learned
through lectures/books. Reading and retaining information is significantly different that being
able to apply what one has learned through books/lectures.

CONCLUSION
29. Please use this space to share any other feedback,
comments, or suggestions about your experience at Western
Technical College.
Text Response
I am very glad i took this course. i now know a lot more in this industry and i can't wait to learn
more while i am working in the field.
my expierence at western tech has been dreadful to say the least. from the fact of feeling like
i am being baby sitted as an adult is very frustrating, i understand the value of the machines,
but as an educated adult, i did not come back to school to be treated less than or equal to a
freshman in highschool. the fact that i have put all this work in and still not be done in 2
semesters, when i feel i have already capped on the information i am learning, is extremely
upsetting. so far i sort of regret moving away from home to further educate myself.
Overall this experience has been excellent. Small class size was great for more personal
help from instructors on a daily basis. The shop facilities are great for learning. High quality
instrucors.
this program is quite depressing, i dont enjoy coming to school, theres a handfull of days that
i enjoy but i guess school isnt supposed to be fun. really like that its a one year course thoug.
i wouldnt have done it if it was a 2 year
make grades of the classes readily available so you can see how youre doing in the class
and make adjustments. treat every student the same. i felt singled out the majority of this
course because one instructor and i didnt get along. i am almost certain that my grade in
those classes will reflect this. i cannot wait to be done with this program and get out of this
school. i had an awful experience here. hire a new teacher for this person’s position. randy
was a great level headed teacher that worked through problems with you efficiently and didnt
make you feel like an idiot if you didnt know the answer. also dont make us buy $146 used
books that we only read six pages out of. i dont have that kind of money to be wasting.. make
photo copies and hand them out. ill gladly pay the printing fee in my tuition. overall as ive said
multiple times now i was very disappointed and i hope that something changes with this
program. and quickly as im here throughout the summer unfortunately. i hope someone
actually is reading these surveys. thank you.
For the most part, my experience has been a very pleasant one. However, there seems to be
a lack of understanding on both the students and instructor's behalf of the diversity of the
students going to college at W.T.C. There have been numerous conversations that I've heard
taking place around me where individuals involved in conversations have no idea of the
"nerves" that they may be stepping on or how sensative others around them may be. Of
course, this is an adult learning center and individuals can only control their own actions, but
sometimes it seems like some Sensitivity Training would go a long ways for both students
and instructors.
