Instructional Modes

The instructional mode refers to the way a class is delivered. The mode definitions are listed below. Courses may be delivered as a combination of multiple instructional modes. See the Quick Reference Code Combinations table below to view those multiple instructional modes

INSTRUCTIONAL MODE DEFINITIONS
P – In-Person A traditional face-to-face class which may require the use of technology and internet access.
CM – Compressed A face-to-face class which may require the use of technology and internet access delivered in less than the standard term length, which requires an increased workload for the student in a shorter amount of time.
IDL – Interactive Distance Learning Students participate in a synchronous interactive format by the use of video cameras and microphones. Students are able to participate in classes that are available at more than one campus location. These classes can originate from any of Western’s campuses.
BL – Blended Classes that combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online instruction and participation requirements. The online portion of the course is less than 50% of the time. The student is required to use their Western email address and have access to a computer with internet access in order to fully participate and receive the benefits of the course.
HY – Hybrid Classes that combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online instruction and participation requirements. The online portion of the course is greater than or equal to 50% of the time. Students are required to use their Western email address and have access to a computer with internet access. (This mode has an additional per credit fee for students. Standard meeting patterns will be used.)
CC – Computer Conferencing Classes that require the use of computers for audio, video and/or graphics for real-time synchronous instruction where the students are located either on-campus or off-campus. This will include web-based video conferencing. The student is responsible to have the proper equipment and resources.
OL – Online Classes that can be taken anywhere at any time of the day. The student is required to use their Western email address and have access to a computer with internet access. There are no on-campus requirements. Synchronous online meetings may be determined by the instructor and listed on the course syllabus. (This mode has an additional per credit fee for students.)
