FERPA Tutorial 1

What is FERPA?

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law governing the access to student educational records.

FERPA provides the following rights to each student:

  • To inspect/review educational records
  • To seek amendment to those records
  • To have some control over the disclosure of those records
  • To file a complaint with the FERPA office in Washington, D.C

FERPA prohibits, in most instances, the release of student record information to outside parties without prior consent of the student.
